MITCHELL, SD – Several Northeast Community College Utility Line (UL) students earned trophies at the 2014 College Lineman Rodeo, at Mitchell Technical Institute (MTI) in Mitchell, SD.
The rodeo attracted student-linemen competitors from Alpena Community College, Alpena, MI; Blackhawk Technical College, Janesville, WI; Linn State Community College, Linn, MO; Metropolitan Community College, Kansas City, MO; Metropolitan Community College, Omaha; Morraine Park Technical College, Beaver Dam, WI; Northeast Community College, Norfolk; Western Nebraska Community College, Alliance, NE; and the host school, MTI.
Northeast took two teams to the competition. Team One earned fourth place overall, while Team Two placed sixth.
Northeast Community College Team One student Josh Suckstorf, of Norfolk, was the first-place overall lineman winner with a time of 7:44:25. Ezra Piper of Linn State won second place overall lineman with a time of 8:17:57.
Suckstorf also took first place in the individual cross-arm change-out contest and placed first in the obstacle course. Justin Comer, of Beatrice, took third place in the cross-arm change-out contest. Team Two member Tristan Bettenhausen, of West Point, was fourth, while Team One member Gordon Needs, of Stapleton, placed sixth.
In the team cross-arm change-out competition, Northeast Team One members (Tyrel Hinton, of Taylor, Suckstorf, Hinton and Comer) placed first while Team Two members (Niall Quigley, of Lake Katrine, NY, Trey Dasher, of LaVista, Alex Meeks of Taylor, and Bettenhausen) placed fourth.
Jake Fox, of Turin, IA, served as an alternate.
Northeast Utility Line Instructor Kyle Voecks accompanied the students to the event. Other Northeast UL faculty include Matt Johnson, Tom McKeon, Roger Nelson, and Larry Oetken.
Meanwhile, three former Northeast Community College Utility Line students finished in the Top Ten Apprentice competition in the 2014 American Public Power Association Lineworkers Rodeo this past weekend in Edmond, OK.
Spencer Frederick, a 2012 Northeast UL graduate formerly of Veridgre, now working for the Grand Island Utilities Department, finished second and Cole Sokol, a 2011 Northeast UL graduate formerly of Verdigre, now employed by Lincoln Electric System (LES), placed fourth. Brent Foxhoven, a 2010 Northeast UL student formerly of Fremont and also employed by LES, finished tenth.
This rodeo is considered the “ultimate venue” for public power lineworkers across the nation to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Journeymen and apprentice lineworkers compete for professional recognition, attend training courses, and practice essential skills in a safe environment.
