  • Northeast Student-Athletes Recognized for Academic Success

    by jamesc  4/11/2014 11:34:23 AM --  NORFOLK – Jabbar Washington's prowess on the basketball court is well known in Region XI of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference. But the sport isn't the only focus of the point guard on the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team. “Coming here (Northeast) was the best decision I ever made,” Washington said. “Being a student and an athlete is not easy, but my coaches have helped me develop into the young man that I am today. I came here as a boy, but I will leave here as a young man.”

  • Northeast Signs Women's Basketball Recruit from South Dakota

    by jamesc  4/11/2014 11:20:11 AM --  NORFOLK – Northeast Community College has signed a women’s basketball recruit out of South Dakota. Sydney Koel is a 6’2” forward/post from Sioux Falls. Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said Koel is a great player for the Northeast program. “Sydney is a mobile post player who can run the floor, post up, and also shoot the occasional three. Having a post with that kind of size and versatility is such a luxury.”

  • Northeast Women's Basketball Team Ends Regular Season With a Win

Hawks Coach Matt Svehla was pleased with his team’s performance. “This was our last regular season game and we really wanted to play well. I thought that we did a good job of taking care of the basketball and we ran the floor very well. When we defend and run the floor, good things happen for us.”

  • Northeast Beats Central 104-82

    by jamesc  2/20/2014 8:20:21 AM --  NORFOLK – It was tale of two halves for the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team Wednesday night. “Our first half of play was not very good. We just were not into it,” said Matt Svehla, Northeast Coach. But the Hawks turned things around after intermission and went on to a 104-82 victory over Central Community College-Columbus here.

  • Turnovers Were Key in Northeast Women's Loss to NIACC

    by jamesc  2/17/2014 8:16:33 AM --  MASON CITY, IA – Turnovers hurt the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team in its 78-73 loss here Saturday to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). Northeast Coach Matt Svehla said his team played poor in the first half. “We had 14 turnovers during the first 20 minutes and that really hurt. We out shot them in each half, but the turnovers and our inability to box them out cost us the game.”

  • Northeast Women's Basketball Team Reenters the National Rankings

The 24-2 Hawks come in at #24 in this week’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll. Northeast broke into the Top 25 in December and January, reaching #23 before falling out of the poll.

The Hawks, who held a 39-37 advantage at half-time, allowed eleven turnovers, gave up two open three point shots and saw the Reivers (20-3) score off offensive rebounds.

    by jamesc  1/27/2014 8:38:17 AM --  BEATRICE – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team survived a 52-48 road win here Saturday over Southeast Community College. It was a close game throughout as the Hawks only had a one point advantage at half-time 29-28.

  • Northeast Women's Basketball Team Improves to 17-2

    by jamesc  1/22/2014 7:54:13 AM --  FREMONT – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team has improved to 17-2 following a road win here Tuesday night against the Midland University JV, 72-57. Emily Gamble led the Hawks with 16 points while Alison Klostergaard had 12, and Annie Szczepaniak contributed 10.
