NORFOLK – Business instructors became students this summer as they completed an extensive study in personal finance. The three-day training allowed them the opportunity to learn more about personal finance content, innovative and creative teaching methods and resources, as well as earn financial education industry certification.

I have had the privilege and honor of serving at three of the six community colleges in Nebraska for well over three decades. I was born and raised in Central Nebraska and enjoyed my first community college experience at Central Community College in Hastings and Grand Island followed by my work at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte and McCook. And now, more than three years later, I am pleased to be serving as a part of the team at Northeast Community College.

CHICAGO - More than 1,600 of America’s best and brightest college students traveled to the Windy City to Step Up to the Challenge as they showcased their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to win more than $81,000 in cash awards. This included members of the Northeast Community College Phi Beta Lambda chapter.

The Center for Enterprise (CFE) at Northeast Community College and the Nucor Detailing Center (NDC) had such great success with a Career Fair Open House earlier this year that a similar event is planned for later this month.
“Our previous career events have provided over 50 new teammates with the training and skills necessary to successfully be hired as a drafter/modeler,” said Jason Ternus, lead at NDC. “Our growing need for drafters/modelers has created this unique opportunity for anyone interested in a career with Nucor.”

NORFOLK – Landing a new manufacturing facility in any community is often considered as a coup by economic development specialists, city leaders and citizens alike. It is often the perception that these types of facilities bring stable and relatively high paying jobs with them. While that is generally a true statement, it comes at a time when a study shows that Americans are reluctant to choose a career in manufacturing.

NORFOLK – Several members of Northeast Community College’s basketball and volleyball teams have earned post season academic honors. The twenty-two student-athletes have been named to the Spring 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association Region XI Academic All-Region Teams. Northeast is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

NEWBERRY, FL – Steve Cornett led the Northeast Community College archery team with several top ten finishes at the 2015 Intercollegiate Archery Championships at the Easton Newberry Center here recently. The national championships attracted teams from several major universities, including Stanford and Michigan State, as well as state, community and technical colleges from across the country.

NORFOLK – Jacob Ripple has been named the new director of athletics at Northeast Community College.He arrives at Northeast with an extensive resume at the junior/community college level– most recently serving as eligibility and athletic academic coordinator at Blinn College in Brenham, TX.

NORFOLK – A logo that will be used to mark the City of Norfolk’s sesquicentennial has been designed by an artist who works at Northeast Community College. The design of Jeanette Johnson, Northeast publications coordinator, will be incorporated into everything surrounding the community’s 150th anniversary in 2016.

OMAHA - Students from across the region took home honors in the ninth annual CDL Truck Driving Championship held recently at Metropolitan Community College’s Applied Technology Center here. The CDL Student Truck Driving Championship challenged truck driving students to demonstrate driving and vehicle inspection skills with various driving maneuvers. Thomas Dow, Norfolk, a student in Northeast Community College’s truck driving program, took third place in the driving competition.

NORFOLK – Over 170-years of combined service was recognized recently at Northeast Community College. That is the amount of time Wayne Erickson, Jim Gross, Jim Marten, John Miller, Shirley Powers and Louise Torkelson have given to the institution. But those years of service are coming to an end as the four men and two women will retire at the end of the academic term.
