Northeast women fall to Iowa Western

by jamesc  1/16/2014 8:34:10 AM --  COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team came up short in its latest contest against Iowa Western Community College. “We did not play very well on either end of the court. We did not shoot very well, we did not defend the 3 point shot very well, and we did not rebound very well,” according to Matt Svehla, Northeast coach. The Hawks fell to the Reivers (17-1) Wednesday night in Council Bluffs, IA, 74-58.

Svehla said his team did a nice job defensively in the post, but then struggled to get rebounds. “Iowa Western worked the boards hard and we did not get people boxed out.  I really thought that we would come alive in the second half, but Iowa Western hit a couple of threes to open the game up and we didn’t answer.   They went on to shoot a much better percentage than we did in the second half and we just never got much going.  Iowa Western is a very solid team, but we need to play better.”

Alison Klostergaard led the Hawks with 12 points, followed by Emily Gamble and Lexi Murphy with 10 points each. Elsewhere, Jamea Coleman, Yasmin Miller, and Megan Trinder each contributed seven points, Debinique Knowles had three, and Annie Szczepaniak had two.

Northeast (15-2) will host Marshalltown Community College in women’s-men’s doubleheader this Saturday at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus. Women play 5 p.m. while the men will tip-off at 7 p.m.
