COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – For the second time in as many days, the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team survived a down to the wire finish. The Hawks beat Colby Community College in overtime during the second day of the Iowa Western Community College Classic Saturday here, 93-86. Northeast is now 9-3.
Lyle Hexom hit a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the ball game, 84-84. Colby was unable to get a shot off, which forced overtime. The Hawks took the lead on the first possession in overtime when Buay Tuach hit a three-point shot. Northeast did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Jabbar Washington led the Hawks in scoring with 22 points. Joining him in double figures were Sheed Fairly with 18, Chime Moneke and Tuach with 14 each, Hexom with 12, and Khapri Alston with 10. Moneke led the Hawks in rebounding with nine.
As a team, the Hawks blocked six shots, adding to their nation leading total of 133 blocks on the year.
Northeast will take on Southeast Community College Tuesday evening at the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. Tip-off is set at 7:30 p.m. The Northeast women will play Southeast prior to the men’s contest at 5:30 p.m.
