BETHANY, KS – The Northeast Community College golf team competed recently in its opening tournament of the spring season – the Swede Spring Invitational at Bethany, KS.
The Hawks finished sixth in the eight team field, shooting a two-day total of 698. Host Bethany College won the event with a 597. Northeast’s Kenny Kuchar, Meadow Grove, had a top 20 finish. He tied for 13th with four other players with a two-day score of 161. His second day 79 was a career best. Zach Dunlap of Garden City Community College took individual honors with a 144.
Elsewhere for Northeast, Trent Peterson, Jackson, finished 27th with a 176; Brandon Schmidt, Columbus, was right behind with a 177 and placed 29th; Mike Smith, Battle Creek, finished 35th with a 184 and Trade Deeder, Madison, shot a 192 and placed 38th in the 48 man field.
Northeast Coach Brad Bosh was pleased with his team’s efforts. He said even though weather conditions were worse than the first day of the meet; the team took 26 shots off its opening day total. “We played in 20 mph winds with gusts of up to 35 mph. All of my guys improved their scores and I was very happy, even though we still have a lot of work to do,” Bosh said. “I am so proud of all of them by the way they kept grinding it out today, they never quit.”
The Hawks next tournament will be the Hastings (College) Bronco Classic at Lockland Country Club on Friday, March 29th.
