BEATRICE – The Northeast Community College volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 2-for-2 finish at the Southeast Community College Tournament here over the weekend.
The Hawks opened tournament play by defeating McCook Community College on Friday, 25-15, 25-17, 25-21.
Grace Ecklund led the team with 12 kills, Maggie Earney finished with 30 assists, and Meagan Backer had two ace serves. Brittany Sullivan recorded 12 digs, Ecklund had two block assists and Taryn Luedtke had one solo block.
Later that day, Northeast fell to Northeastern Oklahoma A & M in three sets, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25. Luedtke registered eleven kills and one solo block, Earney had 16 set assists, and Backer had 18 digs. Also in the match, Sullivan had three ace serves and Ecklund had one solo block.
The Hawks had two more matches at the tournament on Saturday. It dropped a four set match to the host team, 15-25, 15-25, 25-19, 18-25.
Sullivan led the Hawks with eleven kills and two ace serves. Elsewhere, Backer recorded 19 digs, Ecklund had two solo and two assist blocks and Earney recorded 25 assists.
Northeast won its final match in the tournament, a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 victory over Highland Community College.
Sullivan recorded 14 kills and 16 digs, followed by Backer’s 17 digs, Haley Roelle’s five ace serves, Ecklund’s one sole and one assists, and Earney’s 35 assists.
“Overall, we started off the weekend well,” said Amanda Schultze, Northeast coach. “We saw some good things, especially with our freshmen and we noticed some areas that need a little more work.”
The Hawks will host the Northeast Tournament on Friday at the Cox Activities Center gymnasium. Northeast will face North Iowa Area Community College at 3 p.m. and Central Community College at 7 p.m.
