Northeast Employees Provide Meals to Summer Campus Residents

by jamesc  7/7/2014 4:34:10 PM --  NORFOLK – Approximately 30 students are living in the Northeast Community College residence halls on the Norfolk campus over the summer months. Once a week they are being treated to what may be considered as a ‘gourmet meal’ compared to their regular diet of frozen and/or fast food.

“Food service on campus is limited over the summer with the cafeteria closed and dining plans not available, said Amy Kaiser, president of the Northeast Professional/Managerial (PM) Association. “Because many of these students have limited financial resources and transportation opportunities, the chance of a nice meal is not always easily available.”

Kaiser said members of the PM Association came up with the idea of the “Mid-Week Meal” plan at a meeting this spring. “We asked the campus community to support these students with at least one hot meal a week on Wednesdays. And true to form, our employees have come through!” She said employees of a particular division of the college have signed up to provide food during their assigned week.

The Wednesday “Mid-Week Meals” program began June 4 and runs through August 13. Food items have included sloppy joes, pulled pork, tacos, pasta dishes, roast beef and potatoes, baked potato bar items, and ham & scalloped potatoes, among others. Fruits, vegetables, desserts and paper plates and napkins are also provided. The meals are left in the lobby area of Burkhardt and Simon Halls, which includes a small kitchenette.

“The generosity of our employees goes a long way for some of these students,” Kaiser said. “This project has been a huge success and I’m proud to be associated with a group of co-workers who are so generous and caring.”
