NORFOLK – A member of the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team has signed a letter of intent to play Division I basketball in South Carolina.
Jabbar Washington, of Michigan City, IN, will play for Charleston Southern University in the 2014-15 season, according to Buccaneers Coach Barclay Radebaugh.
Washington was named an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Second Team All-Region performer last season after averaging 15.5 points per game. An excellent perimeter defender and strong three-point shooter, Washington also averaged 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.
“We are very excited about adding Jabbar to our basketball family," Radebaugh said. "From the minute we saw him play, we knew he would be a terrific addition. I love Jabbar's size, tremendous athleticism and versatility."
"Our depth on the perimeter was a concern this season," Radebaugh said. "Our style of play requires a number of talented guards and Jabbar will provide immediate help for us in the backcourt. Jabbar has the potential to be a lock down defender and the competitive attitude to match his ability. Like the other members of our class, Jabbar has tremendous character, a high motor, is extremely competitive and a winner. I am looking forward to coaching Jabbar."
Hawks Coach Dan Anderson said, "Jabbar has been a very special person to our basketball program. He's an extremely hard worker who plays the game unselfishly, pushes the ball on the break with great energy and is an excellent three-point shooter. We are very happy for him to continue with basketball at Charleston Southern."
Charleston Southern, located in Charleston, SC, is a member of the Big South Conference.
