NORFOLK – It is a requirement to get into any major event. Without one, there is simply no admission. That includes the 2014 commencement ceremony at Northeast Community College in Norfolk. As it is every year, the ceremony is popular with family and friends, so tickets are required for admittance into the ceremony. This is the second year the ticket has been designed by a student in Phil Schimonitz’s sophomore graphic design classes. The Graduation Workgroup, which consists of seven faculty and staff members from Northeast Community College, vote to select the top two ticket designs. College administrators choose from the two tickets to determine the winning entry.
BreOnna Schneck, of Hooper, created a classy black background ticket for this month’s ceremony. “I was in stunned silence when I had heard that my design was picked. There were many good designs that could have been chosen. I was deeply honored, because we have such a great group of designers in this class.”
Schneck said graphic design is an industry that continues to offer wonderful opportunities for students like her. “I feel our class this year here at Northeast is little bit different compared to past classes. We’re a generation that tends to know a little bit more about the technology that’s being created right now. We have the hands-on drive to excel in this industry.”
After she graduates, Schneck hopes to work for a start-up business or even Hallmark. “As long as I’m doing something with graphic design, I will be happy.” She is willing to travel to land the job that is right for her. “I know there are a lot of openings right now in Knoxville, Tennessee, but I have also been looking at Denver, Sioux Falls, SD, or even possibly going overseas.” Schneck is waiting to hear on a job from a prospective employer in Sioux Falls.
Karen Hoefler, associate registrar at Northeast, said, “We are thrilled to involve the students in their graduation. The creative talent and professionalism exhibited by these students was outstanding.”
Northeast’s 41st Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will also be broadcast on CableOne Channel 20 in all the communities served by the company, and streamed on-line at www.njcaatv.com/hawktv.
