NORFOLK – A Kansas City, MO, man has received an honor for his work as a member of the Northeast Community College speech team. Joe Lose has been named a Norfolk Lions Club Award winner for Outstanding Forensics Speech Team Competitor.
Lose joined the Northeast speech team in fall 2013 with no experience in competitive speech, according to Coach Terry Nelson. “As a self-motivated, ambitious student with an inner drive to win, Joe quickly started bringing home trophies, acquiring a top-novice, second, and third place trophy at his very first tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.”
Nelson said Lose was not content to stop there. He accelerated his efforts and earned an additional 16 individual trophies over the season, while helping the team earn the ultimate end-of-the-year prize - First Place for Team Sweepstakes, Division II at Junior Varsity Nationals in Hutchinson, KS.
“Unshaken by the sometimes merciless ballots common to competitive collegiate speech, Joe has grown incredibly as an effective communicator and leader with an upbeat in-it-to-win-it attitude,” Nelson said.
Five other freshmen make up the Northeast Speech Team: Musa Fofana, Serrekunda, The Gambia; Benjamin Temple, Norfolk; Erica Temple, Norfolk; Drew Sempek, Stromsburg; and Jordan Sager, Norfolk.
Collectively, the team earned over 50 trophies this past season.
