NORFOLK – Six members of the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team scored in double figures in Monday’s win here over the Morningside College JV, 92-73.
“We won pretty handedly, but we did not play very well at times,” said Matt Svehla, Northeast coach. “We shot nearly 50% for the game, but it should have been much higher. We missed far too many easy shots around the basket and our defense was sometimes missing. I was, however, happy to see that we recorded 28 assists on 40 baskets.”
Svehla said although Alison Klostergaard and Megan Trinder were not feeling well, they were keys to the victory. Both recorded double doubles. Klostergaard finished with 16 points and ten rebounds while Trinder had ten points and 16 assists. “16 assists is a bunch and that number would have been even higher had we finished better,” Svehla said.
Other Hawks scorers include: Ena Viso with 16 points, including two-for-four in three-point shots, Yasmin Miller had 15, Annie Szczepaniak finished 13, Emily Gamble had 12, Debinique Knowles had six and Jamea Coleman, had two. Knowles led the team in rebounds with 12.
With the win, Northeast improves to 24-2.
Northeast has a tough test in its next contest. The Hawks take on #1 (NJCAA Div. II) North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
