He was one of three players to tie for fifth with a two-day total of 153.

But the sport isn't the only focus of the point guard on the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team. “Coming here (Northeast) was the best decision I ever made,” Washington said. “Being a student and an athlete is not easy, but my coaches have helped me develop into the young man that I am today. I came here as a boy, but I will leave here as a young man.”

The scholarship recipients and their sponsors were honored during the annual Scholarship Luncheon, which recognizes the sponsors for helping Northeast students succeed with their education.

  • ESU 8 Awarded Grant to Update Links to Northeast Community College

    by jamesc  4/11/2014 11:26:00 AM --  NELIGH – Educational Service Units (ESUs) in Northeast and North Central Nebraska have been awarded a grant to further their distance learning capabilities. USDA Rural Development Nebraska State Director Maxine Moul visited Neligh recently to present officials of ESU #8 a certificate recognizing the $287,442 grant to upgrade its distance learning equipment between 30 schools and Northeast Community College. It is part of $1.2 million in funding awarded to several ESUs in the state.

  • Northeast Signs Women's Basketball Recruit from South Dakota

    by jamesc  4/11/2014 11:20:11 AM --  NORFOLK – Northeast Community College has signed a women’s basketball recruit out of South Dakota. Sydney Koel is a 6’2” forward/post from Sioux Falls. Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said Koel is a great player for the Northeast program. “Sydney is a mobile post player who can run the floor, post up, and also shoot the occasional three. Having a post with that kind of size and versatility is such a luxury.”

  • Hawks Golf Team Finishes Third at Iowa Tournament

    by jamesc  4/7/2014 8:17:48 AM --  ANKENY, IA – The Northeast Community College golf team finished third in the Iowa Central Community College Invitational here over the weekend. The Hawks shot a two-day total of 622 at Otter Creek Golf Course. Iowa Central captured first with a 602 followed by North Iowa Area Community College with a 614.

  • Northeast to Host Child Abuse Detection Training

Dr. Robert Cox, former president, and J. Paul McIntosh, former member of the Board of Governors, were recognized at this week’s annual banquet of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce. Both men currently serve on the Northeast Community College Foundation Board.

  • Northeast Foundation Board Members Have Ties to Siouxland

Members represent varied backgrounds, bringing strength and diversification to the Foundation. Three of the members have strong ties to the South Sioux City area where Northeast has a presence in the College Center. Douglas Garwood, Antonio (Tony) Gomez, and Arlan Kuehn, are all well-known and have strong ties to Dakota County.
