The Norfolk delegation, which included Northeast Community College President Dr. Michael Chipps and Associate Vice President of Development and External Affairs Dr. Tracy Kruse, joined several others from across the state who met with members of Congress, departmental leaders and representatives, and others. The event was hosted by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Workforce and housing shortages and natural gas supply shortages in the Norfolk area were among the items that were discussed.

“Northeast is committed to working with city officials and other business and community leaders to address these critical workforce and economic development needs,” said Dr. Chipps. “Programs like the Chamber’s Grow Norfolk initiative and the College’s Center for Enterprise are designed to recruit and retain a talented workforce and promote an atmosphere of entrepreneurship and business growth.”

The Norfolk delegation had meetings with representatives of the United States Department of Labor ‘s Employment and Training Administration, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, and the United States Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. In addition, they also took part in issues briefings at the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with other members of the statewide Chamber delegation.

Dr. Chipps said they were particularly interested in finding local, regional and federal partners to help further develop these innovative practices. “Norfolk is doing many exciting things and could really serve as a model that other rural communities could replicate in the future.”

The group also participated in the weekly Nebraska Breakfast at the U.S. Capitol and the Nebraska Chamber’s Annual Congressional Luncheon. Both events allow the visitors to have opportunities to meet with all five members of Nebraska’s Congressional delegation. The Nebraskans spent the remainder of their time in the nation’s capital visiting each office of Nebraska’s two U.S. senators and three congressmen to discuss issues specific to Norfolk and Nebraska.

“We are so fortunate to have five members of Congress who really understand and support the work that we do here in Nebraska,” stated Dr. Chipps. “They were really attentive to our discussions and are interested in working together to create a better future for all Nebraskans.”
</a10:content>

Roll Takes Second at Diesel Technology Challenge

Northeast Community College Diesel Technology student Jeremy Roll, Springfield.

<a10:content type="html">Roll finished second in the individual competition at the recent Nebraska Diesel Technology Challenge. It is easy to see that many of them can feel lonely or homesick without having a close support system nearby. But the College is working to connect those students with community members who have an interest in helping students succeed in college and share some time together outside of the classroom.

“Our ‘Community Connections: Linking Students to Families’ program is designed to help our students adjust when they are away from home,” said Jonathan Langlois, student development coordinator at Northeast. “This is not a program where students come live with a family, but it instead gives students an opportunity to participate in family activities with their assigned host families.”

Langlois said they ask students and their host families to make a commitment to get together at least once a semester. He said that could include activities such as attending a Hawks basketball or volleyball game, a movie night at the host’s home, Sunday dinner or an outing to a local activity. There will be invitations to get together with other host families and students at programs for food and fun.

It allows students to share different cultures they have experienced living in other parts of the country and world,” Langlois said. “The success of this program depends entirely on what the students and families put into it.”

Both students and host families complete questionnaires and then are matched based on their common interests. The students were honored for completing the requirements to receive a Nebraska high school diploma through the GED ® (General Educational Development) tests administered by Northeast’s Adult Education (AE) Program.

Wayne Erickson, dean of institutional advancement, announced the recipients of the Northeast Adult Education Deans’ Scholarships. This scholarship is a $500, one-time award that the Adult Education Department grants to students who plan to attend Northeast Community College on a full-time basis after completing the Northeast Adult Education program requirements and earning his /her state of Nebraska high school diploma.

Northeast executive Vice President Mary Honke was the commencement speaker. In her address, she told the graduates that achieving their high school diploma is one of the keys that will open doors in their futures. “By 2018, it is projected that 2/3 of the jobs will require at least some college, and many of those jobs require an associate’s degree that can be earned at Northeast. Unfortunately, current statistics show that nationwide only 18-percent of those individuals who complete their GED® enroll in college and fewer still continue and eventually earn a college degree.”

“I hope that each of you will be one of those individuals who choose to continue your education so you will have more opportunities open to you in the future,” Honke said. “I encourage you to follow the slogan that represents Northeast Community College – Success Starts Here - and visit with the faculty, advisors and other support staff at Northeast who will continue to help you be successful.”

Students in Andrea Suhr’s Physical Therapy Assistant class participated in a service learning project with other college students across the state called “Shoes 4 Kids.” The Nebraska Student Special Interest Group coordinated the statewide effort.

“The Family Promise Foundation was founded by a physical therapy assistant and distributes free pairs of new athletic shoes to low-income kids in the inner city,” Suhr said.

Suhr and her students collected new children’s athletic shoes during the drive. They also asked others to contribute with additional new shoes. 69 pairs of shoes and $165 were collected. This year, representatives of “Shoes 4 Kids” will be visiting various shelters in the Salt Lake City, UT, area during the American Physical Therapy Association Annual Conference, June 26-29.

A Family Promise Foundation (FPF) spokesman said “While it may not be able to provide a child a home or provide financial support to their family while in Salt Lake City, perhaps a new pair of shoes for the summer might provide them and their family a little hope when hope sometimes is short in supply.”

The FPF reports families with children constitute the fastest growing segment of the homeless population nationally and locally.
