2012-13 Coaches

Head Coach Matt Svehla

Matt Svehla begins his 19th year as the head women’s basketball coach at Northeast Community College. During Coach Svehla’s tenure, the program has posted a 426-140 record. His teams have won 15 of 18 Nebraska Community College Conference Championships and his teams have found the national rankings several times. Coach Svehla has also placed great emphasis on excellence in the classroom. Out of 400 plus 2-year colleges in the country, his past three teams have finished in the nation’s top 20 for team GPA. Svehla believes in playing up-tempo basketball, but he always places an emphasis on execution, fundamentals, and defense.

Svehla has had good success in recruiting Nebraska talent, but he also attracts student-athletes from throughout the United States and from around the world. His philosophy has resulted in a high winning percentage, but he is also really proud of the character and attitude that his teams exemplify. He believes that coachable talent that plays hard and plays together is a formula for success. Team members have reaped the benefits of playing for Coach Svehla. Many of his players have gone on to play at the NCAA and NAIA level.

A native of Clarkson, Nebraska, Coach Svehla earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his Master’s degree from Wayne State College. Svehla also played for the Nebraska Huskers men’s basketball team from 1987-1989. He and his wife, Carol, have two sons, Sedrick and Jamison.

Assistant Coach Dr. Mike Cooper

He’s back! Dr. Mike Cooper was the Assistant Coach from 2000-2009 and will be assuming that role again in 2012-2013. Dr. Cooper also serves as the Director of Veterinary Technology Program here at Northeast Community College. Dr. Cooper earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his D.V.M. from Ohio State University. He and his wife Connie have a daughter, Jessica, and a son, Jacob. Jessica is married to Aaron Graumann, and they have a daughter, Rylee.
